A Master Key System: How Does It Work?

What if we told you that some keys can open multiple predefined doors? This kind of key is actually called a master key, and it provides a variety of benefits depending on the location of the property.

In this article, the Toronto Locksmith will explain what master keys are, how they operate, and how they can benefit you!

A Master Key: What Is It?

Master keys can be used to open several types of locks. It is possible to open one lock with two or more master keys, which are part of a whole master key system. The locks and keys must be the same brand and model in order to have a master key system.

Different levels of access are provided by a master key system. A few of these are:

  • Change Keys. A key that opens one lock can open another lock that is exactly the same. Change keys can also be opened by master keys above the rank of change keys.
  • Master Keys. To convert a simple lock into a master keyed lock, a master key is required. For a certain lock, there can only be one key without the master key.

  • Grand Master Keys. There are several master key systems that can be accessed with this type of master key. Under it, all master systems, as well as their change keys, can be opened with it.

Great Grand Master Keys. With this master key, you can open any and all grand master keys, master keys, and change key systems.

What is the purpose of a master key?

In general, master key systems work by using pin tumbler locks, which consist of small pins that vary in length. A spring pushes down these pin stacks. Upon separating the pin stacks, the plug can be rotated and the locking bolt can be locked or unlocked.

Pin tumbler locks contain key pins that are lifted by a key. These key pins can vary in size. The driver pins, however, are universally sized. In order for a pin tumbler lock to open, the key grooves must be the correct size so that the pins can be raised to the correct height.

The master wafer can be added between the driver and key pin of a pin tumbler lock to turn it into a master key system. Two shear lines will be created in the pin stack once the master wafer is inserted.

In short, a pin tumbler master lock uses a master wafer or pin between the driver pin and the key pin.

How Does A Master Key System Benefit You?

If you’re wondering what master key systems can offer you, here are some benefits you might find interesting. They’re quite numerous, in fact! Master key systems are convenient, which is one of their main advantages.

It is prohibited for employees of many institutions to carry more than one key at the same time, for example. Therefore, master key systems are convenient because there are fewer keys in circulation, meaning there is less chance of losing a key.

Moreover, master key systems enable security and management personnel to quickly access various rooms in an establishment. In an emergency, this can be especially helpful.

Additionally, a master key system can restrict access levels based on an individual’s status and responsibility. As a result, security can be maintained in any part of the property or premise.

Two or more keys are used in a master key system to open one lock. The majority of master key systems utilize pin tumbler locks, which utilize pins wedged between the key pin and the driver pin to form a master key system. Depending on the level of security desired, master key systems can also use different types of locks.

As a result of the increased number of shear lines, the more master wafers there are, the more keys there are to open the lock.

Having a master key system can offer you convenience and security at the same time. The role of trusted locksmith services comes into play here.
