ABOUT BALDWIN VILLAGE

The area takes its name after William Warren Baldwin, a lawyer, doctor, businessman, architect, and politician who owned a large part of the area in the 1800s. Mr. Baldwin had a significant influence on Canadian society. 

In fact, he was the creator of the term “responsible government,” which became the main principle of today’s Canadian democracy.

In the 1900s, the neighborhood experienced an overgrowth of the Jewish population caused by the migration of people who lived in 

The Ward towards the west of the city. They settled in what was later known as Kensington Market, a renowned multicultural place with a rich history and heritage.

As a result, Baldwin Village filled with Jewish commercial facilities such as restaurants and stores. 

The downtown area grew quickly because of its proximity to Chinatown, which led to a large number of Chinese-Canadian visitors and residents.

The University of Toronto, located nearby, also influenced the eclectic character of this area. Students played a leading role in the revolts of the youth movements in the 1960s, which enriched the culture and history of the neighborhood.

Mandel’s Creamery, the last Jewish restaurant standing in the block, was closed in 1995. Today, most of the original houses have become cafés, restaurants, and stores, which give the neighborhood a nice and cozy environment that welcomes tons of visitors every day.
