Founded to be an industrial area, Bermondsey is located in Toronto. Its land covers a triangle bordered by Eglinton Avenue to the northeast, Don Valley to the west, and O’Connor Drive to the southeast. The area was part of the former cities of North York and East York before the amalgamation to form the new city of Toronto.

Bermondsey Background
The region takes its name from a famous road that runs through the center of the area called Bermondsey Drive. The road is also where its prominent businesses were located since the beginning.
Industrial areas have been a sign of development since the Industrial Revolution. However, their location was conditioned by their proximity to rail lines and harbors. This changed with the diversification of transportation means and the birth of trucks. Â
Motor vehicles eased the way goods and export products were delivered to their destination, abolishing the need to load train wagons and ships. Instead, industries could be placed anywhere in the city and use trucks to carry their loads.
Bermondsey History
With no need to have harbors and rail lines nearby, Bermondsey was planned and built just like many other industrial areas that were developed in Toronto during the 1950s and the 1960s.
Unfortunately, as time has passed, newer and modernized industrial areas have been developed leaving the old ones behind, and Bermondsey is no exception. The area has lost businesses and with them, its power to draw the attention of investors.
Today, Bermondsey’s economy is based on manufacturing, warehouses, offices, retail, and non-profit organizations; being the latter the second source of employment after the Peek Freans cookie factory.
