ABOUT DISCOVERY DISTRICT
The Discovery District is a commercial area located in downtown Toronto. Its limits are Bloor Street to the north, Dundas Street on the south, Spadina Avenue on the west, and Bay Street on the east.

The District got its name from the high number of scientific research institutions located in it, particularly in the biotechnology area. Among the many institutions operating in the District there are leading universities like the University of Toronto and renowned hospitals.
The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto General Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and the MaRS Discovery District are some of them. These prestigious Canadian health and research centers are all located between Dundas and College Streets on University Avenue.
Most of what is called now the Discovery District evolved in a section of the former Town of York which later became the City of Toronto. Along Lot Street, the city was divided in two sections in the earlier decades of the 1800s, one in the north and another in the south. 
The north area is where the University of Toronto is located today. This part of York had attracted different institutions and businesses by the time the whole region became the City of Toronto in 1834.
The Ward, a poor neighborhood and the first Chinatown of Toronto, was part of the area south of Lot Street (now Queen). It was demolished in the early 1900s, giving way in the 1960s to the City Hall built on University Avenue´s extension. The extension later became the busy Boulevard of towers, hospitals and scientific research centers of today.
Many of the neighborhood´s residents are considered middle –class people with an annual income of over fifty thousand dollars a year.
