Currently, the area is the object of a large urban renovation plan managed by Waterfront Toronto. Waterfront Toronto is the local authority managing the renovation project. The plan was designed to create a mixed-use neighborhood with commercial and residential facilities near the lake.
The project contemplates the building of 6,000 new residential units, 3 million square feet of commercial space and 5.5 hectares of parks and public spaces. The neighborhood is an intelligent community with homes and businesses connected to cutting-edge fiber optic technology including wide WI-FI service.
In the 1950s, the area became an industrial park which was used primarily as a marine freight transfer facility. By the mid-nineties, however, the region had lost importance and was declining as an industrial node.
Beginning the new century, plans were developed to transform the region into a world-class tourist destination. It focuses on urban design, open spaces, affordable housing, infrastructure, and community services.
The redevelopment of the neighborhood also includes amenities and attractions like offices and institutional zones. The George Brown College for Health Sciences will operate in the zone as well as high-tech businesses attracted by the new developments.
One of the most significant residential developments in the area includes a 200 million dollars residential complex called Parkside. It will be south of Gardiner Expressway, on the northeast corner of Queens Quay East and Sherbourne.
