East York is a regional municipality in the Toronto area in Canada. It has 1.2 million residents who take pride in having an urban and suburban lifestyle that is top among Canadian cities. The area attracts young professional couples because it is a stable community with many good qualities such as schools, libraries, community centers and parks. It is also conveniently located at only twenty minutes from downtown Toronto with easy access to other parts of the city.

There is a variety of stores within walking distance and shopping mall is a ten-minute ride from most homes in the neighborhood. As locals find no need to head off to the suburbs and the former borough becoming more attractive, many are migrating back to the community. Experts and city authorities currently expect this trend to continue and, if anything, to increase over the next ten years. The old borough population is expected to reach near two million during that time. The communities near and around the East York area are going to see population increases too. The trend will continue as new businesses come because of the conveniences of the location.

There is an impact that derives from the above, like increase of traffic flows passing through the neighborhood, longer commuting times and, yes, more pollution. That´s the other side of the coin and the consequence of progress. But it also comes with higher salaries and better jobs as well as higher real estate prices. Remember Silicon Valley?

HISTORY

The Township of East York was incorporated on January 1, 1924. It was mostly a small bunch of market gardens, brick making yards, and a horse race track. The population consisted only of employees of local businesses, and veterans and their families who were returning after the First War. Between the years that go from 1946 to 1961, the population of the place doubled and the neighborhood experienced its most extensive period of growth.

East York remained a borough (actually Canada´s only one) until 1998 when it was incorporated into the metropolitan area of Toronto. East Yorkians liked being a borough for so long because of the feelings of small-town friendliness and neighborliness characteristic of the East York ever since its foundation, something considered to be a trademark of the region.

QUALITY OF LIFE INDICATORS FOR EAST YORK

Quality of life indicator ranks East York well enough to be a desirable location to live, study and work. Some indicators, though, are less impressive like the air pollution index that, according to a study from the City of Toronto’s Environment and Energy Division, increases in areas near heavy traffic roads, especially ultrafine pollutants. The fact is that current development proposals may increase traffic and pollution along the Don Valley Parkway, busy arterial streets like the Danforth, and the Leaside Business Park.

Regarding crime, the neighborhood offers a safe environment for everybody. Crime rates are low or moderate, and residents generally feel this part of the city is very safe. School quality is another story, according to the Fraser Institute Report Card the area has several below average schools, some regular ones, and not many good ones.
