ABOUT GARDEN DISTRICT
The Garden District, located in downtown Toronto, derives its name from Allan Gardens, an indoor botanical garden at Carlton and Jarvis Streets. From a housing standpoint, it is a mixed area. It has a combination of expensive condominium towers, subsidized housing units, Victorian villages, apartment cooperatives, shelters, and Edwardian row houses.

The neighborhood´s boundaries are set by Carlton Street to the north, Queen Street to the south, Yonge Street to the west, and Sherbourne Street to the east. The neighborhood of Moss Park contains part of the Garden District, including the southern section of Gay Village and several heritage sites like the Mackenzie House Museum.
Garden Street has two areas divided by Jarvis Street. The western section runs from Yonge Street to Jarvis and the eastern one goes from Jarvis Street to Sherbourne.
The former subdivision took place almost 190 years ago when Toronto´s incorporation as a city occurred. The zone was occupied by different churches, entertainment centers, and some schools.

The latter portion of the neighborhood was subdivided later during the mid-nineteenth century. Originally, it was an exclusive residential area which declined as working-class families started to move into smaller-size lots.
Today, it is mainly a residential area with newer commercial and institutional developments replacing many of the neighborhood’s older homes.
Part of the eastern subdivision is a decaying area with several boarding houses. This section is on George Street around the Seaton House shelter. The City of Toronto is planning to redevelop it by incorporating those heritage homes now boarded up.
Garden District has a significant number of Francophone people and several French-first education institutions operate here. Paroisse Sacré Cœur, Le Collège français, and École élémentaire Gabrielle-Roy are some schools serving the zone.
