Guelph is a city in the province of Ontario, Canada. Considered by some as an ideal place to live, it is in southwestern Ontario. It has a population of 131,794 people. Known as “The Royal City,” Guelph is about 17 miles east of Kitchener and 62 miles west of Downtown Toronto, at the intersection of Highway 6, Highway 7, and Wellington County Road 124. The city of Guelph was officially founded on April 23, 1827, by Scottish novelist John Galt of the Canada Company, a British land settlement firm. Guelph ranks well regarding several livability indices. It has some of the best employment, pollution, and crime rates in Canada. However, they are less impressive than a few years ago.

The town´s center, beautifully designed as that of a European city, has public squares, broad main streets, and narrow side streets. The historical tradition of the public square has been further enhanced by the recent construction of Market Square, with its spectacular water feature that is used as a skating ring in the winter and a splash park during summer.

Guelph is justly known for its high quality of life. The confluence of the Speed River and the Eramosa River, which enter the city from the north and the east respectively, help create some of this well-deserved fame. Both rivers form large tracts of densely forested ravines and provide ideal sites for parks and recreational trails. Amenities abound in the area: from eating ice cream at the Boat House Tea Room, located at the bottom of Gordon Street, enjoying walks along the river-side trail system, renting canoes or kayaks, or playing with your children at the playground located across Gordon from the Boat House.

After its foundation in 1827, the city has followed a continuous path of progress and development. In 1856, for instance, the Grand Trunk Railroad reached Guelph from Toronto, and the city started to grow using an architectural style and materials that gave Guelph the visual unity seen in older parts of the town today. Probably, the most prominent building constructed during those days is the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, which was completed in 1883 and still towers over the city.

The town has been an attractive place ever since its initial settlement, for both industry and citizens. By 1915, the city had sports competitions, cultural events, a free public library, daily and weekly newspapers, free postal delivery, public, and private separate school systems. A business college and an agricultural college later combined to become part of the University of Guelph, a leading research institution. Nowadays, the city is a progressive and vibrant community with a high quality of life, green initiatives and several of the best standard of living indicators in Canada.

Guelph has the lowest unemployment level in Canada, 3.9 percent as of February 2016, diverse manufacturing and high technology enterprises, a thriving arts scene, and a dynamic cultural core. It is one of the fastest growing regions in Canada; it has been named by fDi magazine as one of the ten best small cities in North America for foreign investment. The city is a hot spot for advanced manufacturing, agro-food businesses, environmental technologies, IT and tourism.

The people of Guelph enjoy a very high quality of life index, according to some ranking sites. It has low to very low scores regarding crime, pollution, and commuting time. Some people complain about math and reading abilities among primary and high school students, but some studies show the number of students who meet or exceed the Province of Ontario standards regarding writing, reading, and math abilities get close to 70% and, in some grades, above 81 %.

Today, many consider Guelph the best place to buy a home, live, and work in Ontario due to the numerous positive indicators it features.
