Guelph is a city in the province of Ontario, Canada. Considered by some as an ideal place to live, it is in southwestern Ontario. It has a population of 131,794 people. Known as “The Royal City,” Guelph is about 17 miles east of Kitchener and 62 miles west of Downtown Toronto, at the intersection of Highway 6, Highway 7, and Wellington County Road 124. The city of Guelph was officially founded on April 23, 1827, by Scottish novelist John Galt of the Canada Company, a British land settlement firm. GUELPH HISTORY
After its foundation in 1827, the city has followed a continuous path of progress and development. In 1856, for instance, the Grand Trunk Railroad reached Guelph from Toronto, and the city started to grow using an architectural style and materials that gave Guelph the visual unity seen in older parts of the town today. Probably, the most prominent building constructed during those days is the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, which was completed in 1883 and still towers over the city.
The town has been an attractive place ever since its initial settlement, for both industry and citizens. By 1915, the city had sports competitions, cultural events, a free public library, daily and weekly newspapers, free postal delivery, public, and private separate school systems. A business college and an agricultural college later combined to become part of the University of Guelph, a leading research institution.
