HALTON

Halton Region is made up of the communities of the City of Burlington, Town of Oakville, Town of Milton, and the Town of Halton Hills.

Located along the shores of Lake Ontario, 45 minutes away from Toronto, Halton Region has been named the Safest Place to live in the Greater Toronto Area and the Safest Region in Canada for several years in a row.

Halton is an area of soothing gently rolling hills with a combination of wooded areas, walking trails, wooden bridges, and orchards of mature landscaped estate gardens.

Just west of Toronto lies this scenic ridge of peaceful fields, forests, and highly sensitive kettle lakes. There you will find not only a centrally located area of exceptional natural beauty but most importantly, family-friendly neighborhoods and a quality of life that makes it the perfect place to live and raise a family.

HALTON HISTORY

Halton is a former county in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is also one of the oldest counties in Canada, named after Major William Mathew Halton, a British Army officer. British settlers started to arrive in the area in the early 1780s.

The Regional Municipality of Halton was established on January 1st, 1974 to replace the former Halton County with the Regional Municipality of Halton Act of 1973. From January 1st, 2003 it has been governed by the Municipal Act. The Chairman of the Regional Council previously appointed by the Ontario government has been an elective position since 2000.

DEMOGRAPHICS

The area has a population of 548.435 people according to the 2016 census data. The average age is 41.3 years and it has a relatively high average income per household of $106,349. The area has experienced significant changes with a population growth that’s more than twice the provincial growth record. Another emerging tendency is the one-person household, outpacing the growth of other household types. In Burlington, one in four households is occupied by one persona and one in ten residents lives alone.

Immigration is principally from South Asia followed by Latin America and the Philippine Islands.

Oakville and Milton are the two most linguistically diverse municipalities in Halton Region where one in four residents speaks a foreign language.

Although it is an affluent community, the Halton region has some 10,000 families living in low income. Both lone‐parent families and non‐family persons continue to have the highest prevalence of low income. Within the Halton Region, Milton experienced the greatest increase in low-income families.

EDUCATION

The region takes pride in offering high-quality education all the way to the high school level. Scholastic achievement seems to rank high and 2018 announcements by the Province of Ontario Government of new, extended investments in education in the area of Halton, aim at maintaining and expanding such achievements.

The province is investing over $65 Million in new schools and renovations in the Halton region starting this year of 2018. This expansion will positively affect students and create an additional 289 childcare facilities throughout Halton.

The new investment will build 39 brand new schools and start 40 major renovations that will include more than 2,700 licensed child care spaces for children aged 0-4.
