ABOUT HARBORD VILLAGE
Located in the center of Toronto, Cabbagetown is a renowned neighborhood with a vast cultural heritage. It is officially named Cabbagetown – St. Jamestown neighborhood and its limits are set by limited by Wellesley to the north, Sherbourne to the east, Gerrard St. East to the south, and Don Valley Parkway to the west.

Known as Sussex-Ulster until 2000, the zone´s name is not clearly defined either as it is called South Annex sometimes. Additionally, the City of Toronto officially calls ¨University¨ an administrative area that includes Harbord Village and the St. George campus.
The origins of the neighborhood go back to the late 1800s when it started as a working-class and lower-middle-class community. It was an intermediate section between the poor immigrant community of Kensington Market, to the south, and the prosperous Annex in the north.
From the early 1920s until the 1960s, Grange Village was a Jewish immigration area particularly around Spadina Avenue and Kensington Market.
In the 60s and 70s, the neighborhood changed due to the massive arrival of university students and Portuguese and Chinese newcomers.
The place was mostly a poor working class and immigrant community during most of the 20th century. However, from the mid-1960s the expansion of the University of Toronto promoted a gentrification process that accelerated in the 1980s. Middle-class academics and other professionals moved in and renovated the old homes returning them to single-family occupancy.
Today, Grange Village homes a large number of professors from the University of Toronto. It also hopes to become a Heritage Conservation District.
