The area is the northernmost neighborhood of the City of Toronto. It is bordered by Finch to the South, Leslie Street to the West, Steeles to the North and Victoria Park to the East. Some residents consider that Hillcrest Village is actually part of another neighborhood located to its south side, the Don Valley Village.
However, both areas are very different regarding their topography as Don Valley Village is mostly a hill and dale region. Their origins differ too as Don Valley was developed in the 1960s and 1970s as a suburban neighborhood.
The history of Hillcrest Valley begins in 1840 when a reformer from England, Robert John Turner, settled in the area.
His home, named Bracondale, was built where Hillcrest Park is today. Bracondale Village grew up as a small settlement right at the intersection of Christie Street and what is Davenport Road today.Â
It later became Bracondale Hill Park, an exclusive residential subdivision.
In 1937, the Bracondale house was demolished to create Hillcrest Park. However, many of the buildings are still standing. Most of the houses at the north end of Hillcrest were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and they still retain the charm and character of the architecture of days gone by.
Presently, Hillcrest is a multiethnic neighborhood where more than sixty percent of the residents are immigrants, mostly of Chinese origin. While the area has a significant number of low-income residents, many of its middle-class families are gradually moving into upper-income brackets.
