ABOUT HUMBERMEDE (EMERY) - NORTH YORK, ONTARIO

Humbermede, or Emery as it is frequently called, is in the northwest section of the City of Toronto. It is bounded by Humber River on the west, on the east by the Highway 400 and, on the south by Sheppard Avenue West which is a principal arterial road in the city. The north boundary of Emery is Finch Avenue, one of the longest streets in the Greater Toronto Area.

The origins of the neighborhood are linked to the Humber River which greatly fostered Humbermede´s development.

Known as the Carrying Place Trail, the river is one of the oldest established transportation routes in Canada and helped in the settlement of Humbermede.

The neighborhood historical roots date back to 1870 when a small farming village was born at the intersection of Finch Avenue and Weston Road. Originally called Dayton, its name changed to Emery to avoid confusion with Dayton, Ohio.

In the 1960s, land use progressively moved from rural to urban, and since then the neighborhood has become a suburban area of mostly semi-detached homes.

Some tall apartment buildings were built on the southwest corner of Finch Avenue and Weston Road with an industrial development area extending east to Highway 400.

Nowadays, Emery is an amazingly varied neighborhood with more than forty-five different cultures represented in the local school system. A diverse array of food shops and restaurants from every corner of the world fill the area´s food scene. Finch Avenue and Weston Road are lined with eateries specializing in East and West Indian, African, Jamaican, Asian, European, Italian, and Spanish foods.
