ABOUT LANSING - NORTH YORK, ONTARIO

Located in the North York district of Toronto, Lansing is a neighborhood that has seen a vast transformation in the past few years. Officially defined by the City of Toronto as Lansing-Westgate, its borders include Yonge Street in the east, Highway 401 in the south, Bathurst Street in the west, and Burnett Avenue to the north.

Lansing is considered a peaceful and quiet neighborhood as it is sheltered from outside traffic by the Don River Valley, the York Cemetery, and Beecroft Road.

In the late 18th century the first European settlers came to the area including Joseph Sheppard and his enterprising family. During the early and mid 19th century, the Sheppards provided the community with an array of businesses and stores. They included sawmills, taverns, and a well-known general store at Yonge and Sheppard which became the hub of the Lansing area.

In 1866 a post office with the name Lansing opened in the store, and sometime later the area became known as Lansing too.

As a historical note related to the Soviet Russian Revolution, York Cemetery located to the north of the neighborhood, is the resting place of the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna of Russia. She was a close relative of the last Russian Czar and escaped to Canada after the Bolsheviks executed the Russian royal family.

With a lot of construction taking place recently, Lansing has primarily become a residential neighborhood of homes occupied by two kinds of single families. Older couples, living in post-war bungalows and younger wealthy families living in torn-down cottages rebuilt into two-million-dollar dwellings.
