ABOUT LITTLE JAPAN
Also known as Little Tokyo, Little Japan is a neighborhood with a rich history and cultural heritage. It is west of the University Avenue, on the intersection of Dundas and Bay Street in the area formerly known as The Ward, in Toronto.
Little Japan is currently located where the first Chinatown used to be. The neighborhood began as a settlement for the Nikkei, a name given to Japanese citizens living abroad. Similar Japanese enclaves, also called Japantowns, have spread all around the world as a result of massive Japanese migrations over the years.
Dundas and Bay Street area, formerly known as The Ward, has been famous for its large immigrant communities including Jewish, Chinese, and Japanese.
The original Jewish and Chinese markets formed as a need to develop the economy within the community.
Most immigrants had no legal status and had to face discrimination during the 19th and 20th century. This made it nearly impossible to find formal work.
As a result, most immigrants started their own retail businesses such as restaurants and laundry services. This ended up drawing the attention of a large number of visitors. Over time, more members of the community emulated the strategy and filled the neighborhood with stores showing their heritage and enriching the local culture.
In the late 1950s, the area was expropriated, and both the Jewish market and Chinatown shifted their location. However, a new immigrant community started to take shape in the area, Little Japan.
Today, the neighborhood continues to expand, and more establishments open every week to please locals and visitors with the ancient and delightful Japanese culture.
