Caledon is a town in the Regional Municipality of Peel in the Greater Toronto Area. It is a rather rural area that is going through an urban development process. It is a combination of the metropolitan region, along with some villages, and hamlets. One significant urban development is Bolton, right on its eastern side next to the York Region.

Located northwest of the city of Brampton, Caledon is one of three municipalities of Peel Region and the most significant city or town by area in the Greater Toronto Area. Several years ago the region got recognition as the safest town in Canada to live in. That situation has changed since then, and crime rates are more noticeable now than eight years ago. However, they are still relatively low compared to similar towns.

HISTORY

Created in 1974, the Town of Caledon represents the combination of the townships of Albion, Caledon and the northern half of Chinguacousy, as well as the Villages of Bolton and Caledon East. All of these towns were part of the former County of Peel, created in 1805. The townships of Albion, Caledon, and Chinguacousy, Surveyed in 1818-1819, were opened for settlement in 1820. Today, while some historical hamlets have disappeared over time, Caledon’s communities continue to reflect early settlement patterns done around or next to water-powered mill sites.

EDUCATION

The famous Fraser Institute Report Card, which rates schools using a system that goes from 0 to 10, ranked Caledon´s schools on the top third in the Ontario area for the year of 2016. Some schools like Mayfield Secondary and St. Michael in Bolton got scores of 7.5 and 7.4 respectively. Other schools did less well, but Peel District School Board was fast at rejecting the results as incomplete and distorted.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Caledon is always topping, or near topping, the ranks regarding the quality of life because of its many low scores in aspects like crime and pollution, to name two. In 2016 it was number 26 among the thirty best places to live in Canada, according to MoneySense Magazine. Of all 219 cities studied on the report considering high incomes, high average household net worth, healthy population growth and low crime, Caledon rated in the top 25th percentile. For the year of 2017, the city ranked again as one of the best places to live in.

Air pollution is limited in the area because it is a rural, forested place. However, pollen contamination can affect some people with respiratory problems and ultrafine contaminants. Pollution caused by diesel motor vehicles has become a problem particularly near busy highways.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of 2017, Caledon’s population is 71, 600 people, having experienced an increase of 11.8% from 2011 to 2016. The people of the area have an average age of 39.1 years, and are almost evenly divided between males and females. Single-detached homes constitute the vast majority of occupied dwellings in the area. Between two and four occupants represent the majority of households.
