Cambridge is a city in Southern Ontario where the Grand and Speed rivers meet in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontari. It was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of the Galt, Preston, Hespeler, the settlement of Blair and a small portion of surrounding townships. This combination of several urban settings was met by considerable resistance from the local population of the different cities as each one has its historical roots and diverse developmental processes.

While the original communities have come together well in the years since amalgamation, they began life apart, and as a result, Cambridge has three historic core commercial areas to preserve for future generations. As Cambridge has developed the open spaces between the first municipalities, have been filled in a fourth commercial core. Today, Cambridge is a thriving emerging and modern city with a diverse population of more than 125,000. It is within the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and is part of one of Ontario’s fastest growing and economically prosperous regions. With its perfect position located along Highway 401, only 45 minutes from the provincial capital of Toronto, Cambridge is well positioned to survive this “shotgun marriage” arranged by the Provincial government to continue to grow and flourish into a prosperous metropolis and one of the best places to live in the Province of Ontario.

CAMBRIDGE HISTORY

Incorporated in 1973, when the three municipalities of Galt, Preston and Hespeler and the settlement of Blair were amalgamated into a single legal entity under the name of Cambridge. The new entity was considered a “shotgun marriage” arranged by the Provincial government and opposed by many. However, the evolution of the modern administrative body developed well, and today they form an established political and executive authority.
