Moss Park VILLAGE
Moss Park is a suburban area located in Downtown Toronto known for its multiple public-housing options. The neighborhood is bordered by Parliament Street to Queen Street East and the Don River to the east, Jarvis Street to the west, Carlton Street to Parliament Street to the north, and Eastern Avenue and Front Street to the south.

Before it became a suburban area, the land belonged to William Allan, a Scottish politician, businessman, and banker. The Allan family built the first home between today’s Queen and Shuter, west of Sherbourne.
Moss Park, like most of Toronto, was subjected to an in-depth renovation project that transformed the city into a suburban district. The neighborhood was thought out as a housing solution for the workers in the industrial area nearby.
In the 1960s, the city of Toronto experienced a massive influx of immigrants coming from different parts of the world such as Asia, Central and South America, and Europe. This massive migration demanded more housing space.

As a result, the city developers demolished most of the existing buildings including the original house of the Allan family and built big towers with enough space for huge public housing projects. That way, the government was able to provide more people with a real possibility to have a roof on their heads.
Today, Moss Park is known as a residential area. It features mid-rise apartment buildings with ground-floor retail businesses. It is home to multiple homeless shelters and low-income families that rent condominiums.
A large community center stands in the place where the Allan family house stood for many years.
