ABOUT GRANGE PARK

Grange Park is a neighborhood in downtown Toronto with a history of distinguished residents and elite origins. The place is located between Spadina Avenue on the west and University Avenue on the east.  It is bounded on the north by College Street and by Queen Street West on the south.

Postal Code: M5V

The area has seen the commercial businesses of Chinatown extending within its area. Kensington-Chinatown, a planning neighborhood from the City of Toronto, encompasses Grange Park now.

A park called Grange Park gave the neighborhood its name. The park, in turn, got its denomination from ¨The Grange¨, a mansion built in the early 1800s by G. D’Arcy Boulton. Mr. Boulton, who belonged to a prominent local family, was Auditor-General of Upper Canada.

George Brown

Other distinguished early residents of the area were George Brown and the family of William Lyon Mackenzie. George Brown was Father of Confederation, fighting for the separation of church and state and representation by population and owner of ¨The Globe¨ a local newspaper, while William Lyon Mackenzie was Canada’s longest serving Prime Minister.

Initially, Grange Park was an elite neighborhood with mansions lining Beverley Street. The area declined, though, becoming a working-class immigrant community in the early 1900s.

By 1914, the area west of University Avenue in the neighborhood had been settled mostly by Jewish families coming from Eastern Europe.

Some fifty years later, immigrants from China had become the dominant group in the zone. They moved westward to Dundas Street and Spadina after the city´s first Chinatown was demolished giving way to the new City Hall.

Nowadays, the place is a mixed area with residences ranging from working-class cottages, built in the 1800s, to semi-detached homes to mansions. Frequently, homes are rented to College students from the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Arts and Design.
