ALEXANDRA PARK
Alexandra Park is a neighborhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Alexandra Park is bounded by Dundas Street West on the north, Spadina Avenue on the east, Queen Street West on the south, and Bathurst Street on the west.
THE ANNEX
The Annex is a neighborhood in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The traditional boundaries of the neighborhood are north to Dupont Street, south to Bloor Street, west to Bathurst Street and east to Avenue Road.
BALDWIN VILLAGE
Baldwin Village is a commercial enclave in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the west of downtown Toronto, within the Grange Park neighborhood, one block north of Dundas Street West, between Beverley and McCaul Streets. The former modestly sized homes on the street have been converted to restaurants and small shops selling arts, crafts and curios.
CABBAGETOWN
Cabbagetown is a neighborhood in central Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Administratively, it is defined as part of the Cabbagetown-South St. Jamestown neighborhood.[1] It largely features semi-detached Victorian houses and is recognized as “the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housingin all of North America”, according to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association.
CITYPLACE
CityPlace is a neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, within the former Railway Lands. When completed, this area will be the largest residential development ever created in Toronto. The area is bordered by Bathurst Street to the west, Lake Shore Boulevard to the south, and Front Street to the north and Blue Jays Way and the Rogers Centre to the east.
CHINATOWN
Toronto Chinatowns are ethnic neighbourhoods in and around Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with a high concentration of ethnic Chinese residents and businesses. There are multiple Chinatowns in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
When used directly, the name typically refers to Old Chinatown, which extends along Dundas Street Westand Spadina Avenue. The Chinese community in this Downtown Chinatown originated from First Chinatown, which was located what used to be known as The Ward in the early 20th century.
CHURCH AND WELLESLEY
Church and Wellesley is an LGBT-oriented enclave in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is roughly bounded by Gerrard Street to the south, Yonge Street to the west, Charles Street to the north, and Jarvis Street to the east, with the core commercial strip located along Church Street from Wellesley south to Alexander. Though some gay and lesbian-oriented establishments can be found outside this area, the general boundaries of this village have been defined by the Gay Toronto Tourism Guild.
CORKTOWN
Corktown is a residential neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is just south of Regent Park and north of the Gardiner Expressway, between Parliament Street to the west and the Don River to the east, Queen Street East to Front Street East. Corktown contains many vacated industrial buildings, some in use by movie production, studios, or shops. The West Don Lands, slated to be redeveloped over the next few years, will encompass the south-east corner of this area.
DISCOVERY DISTRICT
The Discovery District is one of the commercial districts in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It has a high concentration of hospitals and research institutions, particularly those related to biotechnology. The district is roughly bounded by Bloor Street on the north, Bay Street on the east, Dundas Street on the south, and Spadina Avenue on the west.
DISTILLERY DISTRICT
The Distillery District is a commercial and residential district in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located east of downtown, it contains numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops housed within heritage buildings of the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery. The 13 acres (5.3 ha) district comprises more than forty heritage buildings and ten streets, and is the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America.
THE ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT
The Toronto Entertainment District is an area in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is concentrated around King Street West between University Avenue and Spadina Avenue.
It is home to theatres and performing arts centres, three of Toronto’s major-league sports teams, and an array of cultural and family attractions. The area is also home to most of the nightclubs in Toronto. The officially designated district does not include Yonge Street, where the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, Ed Mirvish Theatre, CAA Theatre, and Massey Hall are located, nor does it include the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts or the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.
EAST BAYFRONT
East Bayfront, or the East Bayfront Precinct, is an emerging neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is currently undergoing a transformation from industrial use to mixed-use as part of Waterfront Toronto’s plans to create a residential and commercial district urban core near the lake.
The area is bordered by the Parliament Street to the east, Jarvis Street and the Jarvis Slip to the west, and the rail line and Gardiner Expressway to the north.
The area is 15.5 hectares (38 acres) of land. The area was filled in during the 19th and 20th Century to accommodate growth of business needing access to the waterfront.
FASHION DISTRICT
The Fashion District (also known as the Garment District) is a commercial and residential district in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located between the intersection of Bathurst Street to the west, Spadina Avenue to the east, Queen Street West to the north and King Street to the south. Google Maps extends the district further east of Spadina Avenue to Peter Street.
FINANCIAL DISTRICT
The Financial District is a business district in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was originally planned as New Town in 1796 as an extension of the Town of York (later the St. Lawrence Ward). It is the main financial district in Toronto and is considered the heart of Canada’s finance industry. It is bounded roughly by Queen Street West to the north, Yonge Street to the east, Front Street to the south, and University Avenue to the west, though many office towers in the downtown core are being constructed outside this area, which will extend the general boundaries. Examples of this trend are the Telus Harbour and RBC Centre.
It is the most densely built-up area of Toronto, home to banking companies, corporate headquarters, high-powered legal and accounting firms, insurance companies and stockbrokers. In turn, the presence of so many decision-makers has brought advertising agencies and marketing companies. The banks have built large office towers, much of whose space is leased to these companies.
GARDEN DISTRICT
The Garden District is a neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The name was selected by the Toronto East Downtown Residents Association (TEDRA) in recognition of Allan Gardens, an indoor botanical garden located nearby at the intersection of Carlton and Jarvis Streets. The Garden District was officially designated by the Mayor and Toronto City Council in 2001, while TEDRA has since been renamed the Garden District Residents Association. Part of the neighbourhood is within official City of Toronto neighbourhood of Moss Park.
As defined by the Association, the neighbourhood is bordered by Carlton Street to the north, Yonge Street to the west, Sherbourne Street to the east and Queen Street to the south. This area includes the southern part of Toronto’s Gay Village and heritage sites such as the Mackenzie HouseMuseum, Gallery Arcturus and the Merchandise Building.
GRANGE PARK
Grange Park is a neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded on the west by Spadina Avenue, on the north by College Street, on the east by University Avenue and on the south by Queen Street West. It is within the ‘Kensington-Chinatown’ City of Toronto planning neighbourhood. Its name is derived from the Grange Park public park. The commercial businesses of Chinatown extend within this neighbourhood.
HARBORD VILLAGE
Harbord Village is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It lies just to the west of the University of Toronto, with its most commonly accepted borders being Bloor Street on the north, Spadina Avenue on the east, College Street to the south, and Bathurst Street to the west. Areas west of Bathurst, as far as Ossington are also sometimes included, though they are not covered by the residents’ association. The area was previously known as Sussex-Ulster, after two of the major east-west streets in the area. In 2000 the residents’ association decided to rename itself and the area Harbord Village, after the main street running through the middle of the community. The area is also sometimes referred to as the South Annex after the better known “Annex” community to the north. The city of Toronto for administrative purposes places Harbord Village and most of the St. George campus into a region it calls “University.”
KENSINGTON MARKET
Kensington Market is a distinctive multicultural neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Market is an older neighbourhood and one of the city’s most well-known. In November 2006, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. Robert Fulford wrote in 1999 that “Kensington today is as much a legend as a district. The (partly) outdoor market has probably been photographed more often than any other site in Toronto.”
Its approximate borders are College St. on the north, Spadina Ave. on the east, Dundas St. W. to the south, and Bathurst St. to the west. Most of the neighbourhood’s eclectic shops, cafes, and other attractions are located along Augusta Ave. and neighbouring Nassau St., Baldwin St., and Kensington Ave. In addition to the Market, the neighbourhood features many Victorian homes, the Kensington Community School and Toronto Western Hospital.
LITTLE JAPAN
Little Japan now referred to as one of the Toronto Chinatowns is an ethnic neighbourhood in and around Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with a high concentration of ethnic Chinese residents and businesses. There are multiple Chinatowns in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
MOSS PARK
Moss Park is a residential neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The area known as Moss Park is typically considered to be between Jarvis Street and Parliament Street south of Dundas, an area dominated by public housing projects. According to one set of boundaries of the City of Toronto it is roughly L-shaped, bounded on the north by Carlton Street to Parliament Street, on the east by Parliament Street to Queen Street East and the Don River, on the south by Eastern Avenue and Front Street, and on the west by Jarvis Street. This larger, view of the neighbourhood includes the neighbourhoods known as Corktown and the Garden District and a portion of Cabbagetown.
OLD TOWN
Old Town is a neighbourhood and retail district in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was the first of Toronto’s named neighbourhoods, having acquired the moniker no later than 1815, at which time the original town of York was expanding. The old neighbourhood was referred to as “Old Town” by residents, and the new neighbourhood as “New Town”. The site still has a large number of buildings dating back to the 19th-century.
The neighbourhood’s approximate boundaries are Queen Street on the north from Church Street east to Parliament Street, Parliament Street south to Front Street, Front Street west to Jarvis Street, one block north to King Street and Church Street north to Queen Street.
QUAYSIDE
Quayside is a planned neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Formerly dockland and industrial uses, a new housing development is being built between East Bayfront and Port Lands. The new neighbourhood, on 4.9 hectares (12 acres) of land on Toronto’s waterfront, is being planned by Sidewalk Labs, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, as a smart city in a project named Sidewalk Toronto.
QUEEN STREET WEST
Queen Street is a major east-west thoroughfare in Toronto. The western section (known as Queen Street West) begins at the intersection of Roncesvalles Avenue and King Street, where The Queensway continues it west. It extends eastward in a straight line to Yonge Street where it becomes Queen Street East, from there is extend eastwards until after Victoria Park Avenue near the R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant; the road is covered by Toronto Transit Commission route 501 Queen, and some sections are covered by the 502 Downtowner. The centre lanes each way have streetcar, although like many Toronto streets, cars are generally permitted in these lanes.
REGENT PARK
Regent Park is a neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, built in the late 1940s as a public housing project. The project is managed by Toronto Community Housing. It sits on what used to be a significant part of the Cabbagetown neighbourhood, and is bounded by Gerrard Street East to the north, River Street to the east, Shuter Street to the south, and Parliament Street to the west.
SOUTH CORE
South Core is a neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The South Core occupies the eastern portions of the Railway Lands. The remodeling and restoration of Union Station and the construction of a new wave of business and condominium towers is central to this area’s forecast growth.
“Forecasters expect the downtown population to grow 80 per cent to 130,000 by 2031. With the financial district just to the north and the new high-rise South Core on the other side, Union is right at the centre.”
The area has grown rapidly in the last several years. Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway is currently being rebuilt to provide a new one-acre park in the area. Two ramps to the expressway at York and Bay streets are being removed to make room for the park.
ST JAMES TOWN
St. James Town (sometimes misspelled St. Jamestown) is a neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It lies in the northeast corner of the downtown area. The neighbourhood covers the area bounded by Jarvis Street to the west, Bloor Street East to the north, Parliament Streetto the east, and Wellesley Street East to the south.
St. James Town is the largest high-rise community in Canada. It has been identified as one of 13 economically deprived neighbourhoods within the city. It consists of 19 high-rise buildings (14 to 32 stories). These residential towers were built in the 1960s. Officially, approximately 17,000 people live in the neighbourhood’s 19 apartment towers and 4 low rise buildings, making it one of Canada’s most densely populated communities.
ST LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence is a neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The area, a former industrial area, is bounded by Yonge, Front, and Parliament Streets, and the Canadian National railway embankment. The Esplanade off Yonge St.,
lined with restaurants, cafés and hotels runs through the middle of the area. In previous times, the area was sometimes referred to as
‘St. Lawrence Ward’ or more often today as ‘St. Lawrence Market’, synonymous with the large retail vendor market which is the neighbourhood’s focal point. The area is the site of a large city-sponsored housing project of the 1970s, which revitalized an old ‘brownfields’ area. The boundaries of the St Lawrence Neighbourhood Association and the St Lawrence Market BIA are somewhat larger than those noted above. Both groups have boundaries that extend from Yonge to Parliament Streets and Queen Street East to the rail corridor.
TORONTO ISLANDS
The Toronto Islands (formerly known as Island of Hiawatha and also known as Menecing, meaning “On the Island” in the Ojibwa language (cf. Minesing, Ontario)) are a chain of small islands in Lake Ontario, south of mainland Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
TREFANN COURT
Trefann Court is a small neighbourhood in the eastern part of downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north side of Queen Streetbetween Parliament Street and River Street. It extends north only a short distance to Shuter St.
UNIVERSITY (includes Huron-Sussex)
The University of Toronto (UofT, or UToronto) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located on the grounds that surround Queen’s Park. It was founded by royal charter in 1827 as King’s College, the first institution of higher learning in the colony of Upper Canada. Originally controlled by the Church of England, the university assumed the present name in 1850 upon becoming a secular institution. As a collegiate university, it comprises eleven colleges, which differ in character and history, each with substantial autonomy on financial and institutional affairs. It has two satellite campuses in Scarborough and Mississauga.
YORKVILLE
Yorkville is a neighbourhood and former village in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is roughly bounded by Bloor Street to the south, Davenport Road to the north, Yonge Street to the east and Avenue Road to the west, and is considered part of “The Annex” neighbourhood officially. Established as a separate village in 1830, it was annexed into Toronto in 1883. Yorkville is diverse, comprising residential areas, office space, and an array of shopping options.
