The community is known for its numerous high-rise residential buildings. It has been recognized as the neighborhood with the largest number of high-rise apartment buildings in the country.
After World War II, St. James Town experienced a sudden demographic growth. As a result, the local government decided to develop the district into a suburban area with modernist-style, high-rise buildings emulating the construction style of big cities like New York. The neighborhood planners were targeting middle-class residents.
Even though the buildings were initially designed to house middle-class families, they ended up being a housing option to accommodate the increasing number of immigrants after the Second World War and the Great Depression.
As a consequence, the buildings lost their luster and were poorly constructed. Over time, the middle-class families moved to neighboring districts such as Scarborough, Etobicoke, and North York driving the economy further down.
Each residential tower received the name of a prominent city in Canada. The complex served as home to thousands of residents and was surrounded by green space. However, there weren’t many attractive amenities.
Today, St. James Town is undergoing a new phase of development that seeks to improve the residents’ quality of life. This new phase began in 2001 by opening a branch of the Toronto Public Library and a community center.
