The land where St. Lawrence is settled today was infilled to extend the terrain. The added land had port and industrial purposes for many years. St. Lawrence was the first industrial area in the city’s waterfront.
In the 1850s, the region was called The Esplanade. It was located at the center of Toronto’s waterfront area, and it was intended to house government offices and commercial facilities. The newly infilled streets became the railways. That project was completed in 1865.
