Trefann Court is a little quiet neighborhood in downtown Toronto. It is settled next to Regent Park, its northern limit. It also borders with Parliament Street to the west, Queen Street to the south, and River Street to the east.
Like many other districts located near the harbor, Trefann Court combined industrial activity with residential buildings that used to serve as home to the working class.
Even though it is a small pack of houses, Trefann Court played a central role in Canada’s urban planning history. The neighborhood was submitted to an extensive renovation program planned to revitalize the waterfront area of the city in the 1950s. The program consisted of demolishing the existing structures to build more modern and convenient apartment buildings. This initiative emerged as a housing solution for the increasing immigrant population in the region.
That was the origin of neighborhoods like St. Jamestown and Regent Park.
Trefann Court was intended to have a similar purpose, but when the expropriation process was about to start, the residents opposed to selling their homes as Toronto’s housing shortage became a general concern in the population.

The neighborhood was involved then in a public campaign against demolition and the local government had to abandon the development plan. The civil protests led to a nation-wide urban reform that aimed to improve the quality of urban life.
This small district marked the end of neighborhood renewal through demolition and residential tower construction. From that moment and on, residents participate actively in their neighborhood development plans.
Today, Trefann Court features most of its original buildings along with commercial facilities and a few modern apartment towers.
