It is in the district of North York, centered around Yonge Street and York Mills Road. York Mills encompasses Hoggs Hollow named after James Hogg, a settler from Scotland in the early 19th century. Another distinguished early resident was E.P. Taylor, a Canadian philanthropist who donated his property and home to the city. The former is now Windfield Park and the latter is the Canadian Film Centre.
The word ¨York¨ makes reference to the former Town of York, now part of Toronto, and ¨Mills¨ refers to the grist and saw mills that operated here from 1804 until 1926.
York Mills was part of York County and together with other municipalities formed the Metropolitan Toronto regional government in 1953. In 1998, the area was again joined to other five municipalities and formed what is now known as the City of Toronto.
Today, the area is home to luxury condos and high-end homes inhabited mostly by families with a median income close to $300,000. However, the neighborhood has very few walkways as private homes take most of the land available making the neighborhood not very friendly to pedestrians.
Its mills are long gone replaced by office towers and tall condominium towers. Despite all the changes, York Mills has managed to keep a suburban peace that helps make it one of the most attractive neighborhoods in the city.
