Famous for its Bohemian culture, Yorkville is a neighborhood located in downtown Toronto. It limits with Avenue Road on the west, Yonge Street on the east, Davenport on the north, and Bloor Street on the south.

Yorkville used to be a village on its own until it became part of Toronto in 1883 because of its population growth. It was founded by Joseph Bloor, who gave Bloor Street its name, and William Botsford Jarvis. Both men were important members of Canadian society.
The neighborhood was conceived to become a residential suburb from the beginning. The two founders bought land in the area with the idea of sub-dividing it into smaller lots and sell them to people who wanted to live there.
The population grew quickly demanding the region’s incorporation as a village. The area was named Village of Yorkville. As further development occurred, it was impossible for the local government to continue sustaining it as such and thus, it demanded its incorporation as a neighborhood to the city hall.
Over time, the neighborhood became the bohemian center of the city with renowned artistic figures including Neil Young and Margaret Atwood.Â
The district was also the cradle of the hippie movement in Canada.
Continued demographic growth made development imminent in the region. The construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway line led to the opening of office towers, art galleries, fashion boutiques, popular bars, and department stores. This commercial boom increased the real estate value in the area until it became one of the most expensive and exclusive shopping districts in the world.
Today, Yorkville shows an eclectic architecture that includes Victorian-styled homes, commercial venues, and picturesque gardens.
