ABOUT CORKTOWN
Located in downtown Toronto, Corktown is an affordable neighborhood in the city. It is popular with new professionals as it is conveniently located near entertainment districts and businesses. Its boundaries are set by Regent Park to the north and Gardiner Expressway to the south. The area is just between Parliament Street to the west and the Don River to the east.
Postal Code: M5A
In the early 1800s, the place was originally settled by European immigrants. Most of them were working-class families coming from the County of Cork in Ireland. Hence the name of Corktown.
The residents were very poor, employed at local breweries or brickyards, and unable to pay the expensive pew rents at nearby St. James Cathedral. As a result, they built their own church in 1843 and called it Little Trinity Church. The building still stands at 417 on King Street East.
In 1848, Toronto´s first public and free school opened its doors. The Trinity Schoolhouse, as it was named, is located on Trinity Street just south of Little Trinity Church. For the construction of the building, the institution received ample financial support from Enoch Turner.
He was a prominent Corktown brewer and is considered one of Toronto´s greatest philanthropists.
Trinity Schoolhouse still serves the educational needs of children and adults of the area more than 150 years after its foundation. It has been transformed into a museum and it is designed to replicate the classroom ambiance of a mid-nineteenth century school.
In recent years, the neighborhood has been revitalized because new and flexible zoning bylaws have permitted the conversion of commercial buildings into living spaces. As a result, new live-in work studios, condominium lofts, and professional offices are sprawling in the area.
