ABOUT HUMBER SUMMIT

Humber Summit is a small middle-class neighborhood of the City of Toronto located in the northwest pocket of North York. The community´s boundaries are Humber River in the west, Duncanwoods Drive in the east, Steeles Avenue in the north, and Finch Avenue in the South. Steeles Avenue is also the border between the City of Toronto and the City of Vaughan.

By the mid-nineteen-twenties, farming had become the main activity for the locals. However, in the 1940s Humber Summit was absorbed by the expanding city of Toronto and became a summer resort called Riverbank Park.

Toronto residents made Riverbank Park a favorite vacation destination and built many cottages overlooking the Humber River. In 1954 Hurricane Hazel, the worst in Toronto’s history, swept the area. The waters of the river did away with ten of the homes which had already become year-round residences.

To this day, older residents remember with gratitude the heroic deeds of Humber Summit Fire Brigade whose twelve volunteers rescued many of the storm´s victims.

Currently, the neighborhood is known for being a close-knit community with winding roads and rolling hills west of Islington Avenue.

Humber Summit is also home to an old and well-established Italian population. As a result, the area´s lifestyle is heavily influenced by Italian traditions. The neighborhood features Italian bakeries, cafes, pizzerias, food markets, restaurants, and supermarkets. In recent years, Humber Summit has welcomed many new residents coming from East India and Asia transforming the hood into a more culturally varied place.
