Located to the south of the downtown area, South Core is a developing neighborhood near the shoreline of Lake Ontario. It is bordered by Lower Jarvis Street to the east, the railway tracks to the north, Lower Simcoe Street to the west, and Lake Ontario to the south.

The district was built on the eastern area of the Railway Lands. Its transformation is part of a huge development project that wants to revitalize the waterfront area of the city.
The original shoreline of Toronto has been modified. A big part of today’s waterfront has been filled to extend the land and have more usable terrain for the railway lines. Over time, the region developed into an industrial area.
For many years, the land in this area was unused due to rail land concessions. However, around the 1950s and 1960s, the region went through an intense immigration process that demanded more residential areas. As a result, most of Toronto’s waterfront developed into neighborhoods.
South Core takes its name after its location in the southern portion of the financial core of the city. It is settled on part of the former Toronto Harbor. However, it has experienced a drastic change in appearance and purpose.
The neighborhood has a high demographic density because of its location and its major transportation hub, the Union Station.
Nowadays, South Core features beautiful and modern high-rise apartment towers surrounded by numerous businesses and public offices. The district is still in development. The local government expects 80% of population growth by 2031 as a result of new investments and renewal projects.
