What Keys cannot be duplicated?

Some keys are built differently, not just the shape, but what’s inside. Take transponder or laser-cut car keys, for example. They’ve got coded chips that talk to your car, and unless that exact signal matches, the car simply won’t start. Then there are high-security keys like Abloy or DND systems, those are patented and protected, meaning only specific locksmiths or manufacturers can make new ones.

I wish I could say yes, but no and that’s for the best. We can duplicate most keys out there, from house keys to commercial ones, but some are meant to be restricted. For high-security keys, I usually tell clients the safest route is to go through the original manufacturer or authorized dealer. It keeps your system secure and prevents unauthorized copying.

It can be, depending on the type. You’ve probably seen keys stamped with “Do Not Duplicate.” That’s not just a warning, it’s an actual restriction. Some of those are controlled by patent laws or registered to a specific owner. Before I make a copy of anything like that, I always verify who owns it.

Don’t panic because there’s usually a way out. If it’s a non-duplicable key like a transponder or Abloy, I can help by reprogramming or replacing the lock altogether. Sometimes we order a new key directly through the approved channel. This needs patience because it might take a little longer, but it’s the proper way of making sure your new key actually works.

A laser-cut key looks smoother and cleaner, with a groove running through the center. VAT keys usually have a visible resistor embedded in the blade.
