What Keys cannot be duplicated

What Keys cannot be duplicated?

Many people believe that any key can be duplicated—just hand it to a store or locksmith and you’re done. But the truth is more complex. Some keys are designed to prevent copying altogether—because they’re either protected by patents, embedded electronics, or restricted key systems. I’ve been working in the Toronto & GTA locksmith industry for over 15 years, and in my experience, identifying the right key system quickly can save homeowners and drivers a lot of wasted time, money, and risk. Below, I’ll walk you through the types of keys that truly cannot be duplicated, why that matters for your security, and what the alternative solutions look like.

Quick Navigation

Keys are an important thing in our lives as it allows us quick access to a car. Losing a key is unfortunate, but it needs to be worth the pain of obtaining new ones. When you forget your car key inside the vehicle then the worry immediately strikes you that what will you do now?
But don’t worry; Matrix locksmiths in Toronto are experts at resolving this problem. They would either break or repair  the car or house lock. They will replicate and replace your keys, thereby resolving your problem.

As locksmiths are adept at copying keys, they have been able to learn how to forge them as well. They are capable of breaking into a building by making new locksets and forging copies of door keys. Matrix Locksmith Toronto is an expert at opening locks of homes, cars, etc. – but every lock is different and not every key can be duplicated.

Thousands of keys exist on the market, with a wide range of shapes and sizes to choose from. One type cannot be duplicated: DND Master Keys. How many locksmiths would try to duplicate the keys but they are rather invincible. And their doors are also safe because no one can copy them.
DND Keys are best for high-security areas, and they are used everywhere. Many People Prefer DND Keys because they are guaranteed to work.

These are some of the keys that cannot be duplicated and their reasons:

1. Transponder Key:

transponder key

Transponder Keys are used in cars and they cannot be copied because a computer chip inside sends out an encrypted code. These chips are programmed to prevent duplication, and the codes cannot be broken with any instrument that exists.

3. VAT Key:

These keys are the first-ever electric keys. They use resistors and have a built-in electric modification. If the value of current fed into the memory with a given engine key does not match that of the resistor in place, then the car will not start. VAT Key can be duplicated to a certain degree, but cannot be replicated if the original is broken.

4. Tubular Keys:

tabular key

This kind of combination lock is circular and has a circular hole in the middle with metal around it. The keys we carry can’t be duplicated because the notch of the key must fit into a lock perfectly. Deadbolts are also added for extra security which makes it hard to clone and create a duplicate key.

5. Abloy Keys:

This is a high-security lock that requires you to use an access card, and the key can’t be duplicated. Abloy keys are unavailable to be duplicated because they have a cutting mechanism that can’t be imitated. Keys can be made to order, but there are some keys that cannot be duplicated. FAQ

Why can’t some keys be copied, no matter what?

Some keys are built differently, not just the shape, but what’s inside. Take transponder or laser-cut car keys, for example. They’ve got coded chips that talk to your car, and unless that exact signal matches, the car simply won’t start. Then there are high-security keys like Abloy or DND systems, those are patented and protected, meaning only specific locksmiths or manufacturers can make new ones.

Can a locksmith really duplicate any key in Toronto?

I wish I could say yes, but no and that’s for the best. We can duplicate most keys out there, from house keys to commercial ones, but some are meant to be restricted. For high-security keys, I usually tell clients the safest route is to go through the original manufacturer or authorized dealer. It keeps your system secure and prevents unauthorized copying.

Is it illegal to duplicate certain keys?

It can be, depending on the type. You’ve probably seen keys stamped with “Do Not Duplicate.” That’s not just a warning, it’s an actual restriction. Some of those are controlled by patent laws or registered to a specific owner. Before I make a copy of anything like that, I always verify who owns it.

What happens if I lose a key that can’t be copied?

Don’t panic because there’s usually a way out. If it’s a non-duplicable key like a transponder or Abloy, I can help by reprogramming or replacing the lock altogether. Sometimes we order a new key directly through the approved channel. This needs patience because it might take a little longer, but it’s the proper way of making sure your new key actually works.

How do I tell what kind of key I have?

Don’t feel bad if you don’t know just by looking because most folks can’t tell either. But here’s something you should remember, most car keys with thick plastic heads has a chip inside. A laser-cut key looks smoother and cleaner, with a groove running through the center. VAT keys usually have a visible resistor embedded in the blade. Don’t be afraid to send me a quick photo, I’ll tell you right away what you’re dealing with.

Do you handle car keys and ignitions too, or just house locks?

We do both, all day long. Our car locksmiths in Toronto and North York can replace lost car keys, fix ignition switches, and even program smart keys right from the van. No need for roadside assistance or the dealership. Tell us where you are and we’ll be there.

Why do people call Matrix Locksmith instead of the dealership?

It usually comes down to time and trust. A dealership might take days to get you a new key and charge you twice what we would. We get there the same day, cut and program your key on-site, and make sure everything works before we leave. No waiting, no towing, no surprises on the bill. Most of our regular clients first found us because they were stuck, then kept our number after realizing we actually show up when we say we will.

Can you replace mailbox locks too?

Absolutely. Mailbox locks are one of those little things people forget about until the key snaps or goes missing. We do replacement mailbox locks across Toronto, and most of the time, it’s a quick fix. If a piece of the key broke off inside, don’t try to fish it out, it usually causes more damage. Call me, and I’ll take care of it the right way.

What’s the best kind of key if I want something secure?

If you really want to keep things tight, go for DND (Do Not Duplicate) or Abloy keys. These are made for people who can’t risk copies floating around, property managers, business owners, even families who rent out a second suite. They may be a little pricey, but I’ve installed hundreds of these systems across Toronto, and I’ve yet to see one fail.

Can I get a duplicate of a key marked “Do Not Duplicate”?

Only if you’re the authorized owner. If it’s registered under your name or business, we can help through the proper process. Otherwise, we can’t legally copy it, and neither should anyone else. It’s part of what keeps those systems as secure as they are.
